Good MORNING!

Ah, we had the best time last night. Rick and Kay got here in the early afternoon.  We went over and showed them the work being done on the North Shore house. Kay just LOVES construction stuff.  It's so funny -- she and Kory talk construction while Rick and I talk therapy stuff.  Anyway, after that we decided to go to the Antler's Inn for dinner.  Gina called, and she and John came and joined us.  It's always fun to go to dinner at a nice restaurant with a chef. John is an amazing, award-winning chef.  I keep wanting Kelly to meet him so they can talk chef stuff. Anyway, after that, we came back to the North Bay house and played cards until 11 or so.  (Yes, we actually stayed up that late!)

This morning, Kory made his famous breakfast burritos using the tortillas that Kurt and Ashley told us about (fresh flower tortillas you can buy at Costco).  Kory has been buying them ever since. Anyway, we had breakfast. Then we went to the North Shore house to see a bunch of guys putting these HUGE beams on top of the walls to support the third floor and the new roof. It's a crisp, gorgeous day out there. No doubt, Kory will be e-mailing pictures later to share the progress with friends and family.

We'll probably go out and look at some open houses this afternoon. Rick and Kay are considering buying something up here and perhaps moseying up this way either part time or eventually in the case of retirement or whatever.

And now, I'm getting sleepy. Late night, early morning combination does that to me. I think I'll go take a nice late morning nap!

Good Grief!

ANOTHER new client!  Holy moly!  I just made an appointment with another new client who was referred by Dr. Monroe.  Awesome. I'm going to have to be careful about how I schedule these, because I've discovered that the work is very draining.  But I SO enjoy making a difference in people's lives.

A Fun Thing To Do

Well, I'm doing laundry and getting ready for Kay and Rick to stay the weekend with us.  Meanwhile, I found myself on Facebook and saw a fun-looking exercise BreAn posted.  So I'm going to go do that and post it on my blog.  I'm also e-mailing this to some friends so they can respond by e-mail.

The Week's ALMOST Over

Whew!  What a day! We just got home from a Chamber mixer at Mountains Community Hospital. It's always interesting to go there.  Kory was born there (a long, long time ago), and I used to work thee (also a long, long time ago).  Lots of friends and acquaintances milling around. We both did well as far as eating goes -- avoided the table with lemon squares, cheese cake, chocolate cake and the chocolate fountain. We each took the Wii Fit balance test.  Kory was 65 and I was 75 (balance age).  Not a pretty picture, but it was fun.

I saw three clients today and have one more tomorrow morning.  Then I get the rest of the weekend off!  Yay!  Kay and Rick should be here around noon, I guess, and we are ready to enjoy their company.  I'm going to pick Rick's brain about billing insurance for therapy -- learn the do's and don'ts from him.  Other than that, it'll be all play.

On our way to the Chamber mixer, we stopped by the North Shore house to see its progress.  It's a pretty strange thing to stand in what used to be your bedroom and bathroom and look straight up and see the sky. The roof is entirely gone now. Weird, weird, weird.

Well, it's a convoluted blog today, but that's the best I can do. I'm wiped out!

More New Clients and a Backache

Held my 3-hour group today.  It went really well.  Then got two new regular client appointments. Amazing.  So far so good!

Bummer is my back has been hurting all day.  But the good part is it didn't get bad until after I'd come home from group and then running errands.  So I was able to relax.  Pain meds aren't an option, so I took a muscle relaxer the doctor prescribed last year some time.  It makes me really thirsty, but either that or the Advil helped a lot.  Feeling better tonight.

The week is going by so quickly. I have three clients tomorrow morning and then one on Friday morning; then Rick and Kay arrive from Orange County to spend the weekend. We're really looking forward to that.

I was asked to be on the Board of the Lake Arrowhead Film Festival.  My first meeting for that will be Monday evening.  This April will be the LAFF's 10th anniversary.  Kory and I went last year for the first time and really enjoyed it.  It's apparently getting an excellent reputation in the film industry.

That's about all that's going on here.

Software City

Well... we received iLife 09 and iWork 09 today!  It's always exciting to a geek to get new gadgets or new software.  iPhoto is busy right now finishing up identifying faces in my iPhoto library. It's supposed to be done in a few minutes.  I think it'll make it a lot easier to work with the pictures in iPhoto.  (SEE ADDENDUM BELOW)

I finished the 2009 Relief Society directory today.  I've been doing those for over 15 years now for wards from Heber to Salt Lake City to Murray and Lake Arrowhead.  We just have to get it printed and collated now.

Looking forward to having Rick and Kay here for the weekend!  John and Gina will also be coming over on Saturday (and maybe Friday night too) for dinner and cards and fun.  Delightful people that we so enjoy spending time with.

I guess I don't have much else to say.  I did enjoy watching the news today as I paid bills and got things done around the house.

That's it from Software City!

OH NO IT'S NOT!  This is an addendum.  FACES, which is a new feature in iPhoto 09, is AWESOME.  I am in the process of going through and identifying faces of people in my photos, and it is doing an incredible job of matching those faces somewhat automatically throughout the 17,815 photos in my library!  Unbelievable.  Just had to come back and add to the post.

I'm done for now.

Letting a Little Air In

So, as you know, we're renovating our lake house. New kitchen cabinets are going in soon, now that the walls have been knocked out to open it up to the living room. Next, they tore down the walls between the upstairs rooms; and now, they're tearing the roof off!

Check out the picture (to the left).

We're also going to add a deck on the lake side of the master bedroom, and have the new roof extend out over it.  Should be wonderful when it's all done!

Sunday at Church

Well, it was an interesting morning. Not a lot more I want to post about that, but it was an interesting morning at church.  The final speaker during Sacrament meeting was Joe Lewis, and he spoke about virtue.  And he talked about remaining true to our virtues.  That's what I'm left to consider.  And yes, I am purposefully being vague.

We just got home, ate lunch; and in about 45 minutes, we're going to a Memorial Service for Butch Baumann's mother at The Royal Oak.

I'm looking forward to a quiet Sunday evening at home with my hubby after that.

Blue Skies

Gorgeous cumulous clouds moving quickly across the blue sky.  It's a gorgeous day here.

We went out to the house we have for rent in Cedar Glen to meet a potential renter. I had actually never been inside before.  When Kory and I first got married, I owned a house on the same street (directly across, actually).  The homes in that area all burned down in the Old Fire in 2003.  We now own the lot I used to own, and we built this house across the street from it, too.

I really liked the house (the one we have for rent).  Just adorable, and built right on the creek, so you have that "sleep machine" sound outside all the time.  Cozy, three bedrooms, two bathrooms.  Really nice.

Now we're back home. I'm doin' laundry and washin' dishes.  Just finished cleaning out the cat box and scooping up the dog poop from the fake grass in the back (and you thought I didn't lead a fascinating life!).

I figured... now it's time to blog a bit.  So I did!

Long, Exhausting Day...

I had such a busy day today.  Two clients this morning, then a new client at 1 p.m. here.  New clients always take longer, because you're getting their history and learning more about them.  I didn't even get to eat lunch until 3:30!  Good for my weight loss goal. Probably not good for metabolism and health.

Talked to Kory on the phone for a while.  Anxious to see him tomorrow afternoon.  He's been gone three nights and four days.  That's a long time for us!  I think Pluto will probably go crazy when he walks in.  Then I can.

Anyway, hadn't posted today and wanted to say a little about how the day went.  It was good to help three different people (five, really if I count the parents of the young man I saw this afternoon). But it is seriously exhausting.

SO... off to sleepy-time!

Inauguration 'Inspiring' to LDS Leaders

BreAn was kind enough to send me a link to this... Awesome!

Inauguration 'Inspiring' to LDS Leaders

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was represented at inaugural events for President Barack Obama by President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, second counselor in the First Presidency, and Elder M. Russell Ballard, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

"Elder M. Russell Ballard and I were very pleased to have been able to attend today's historic inauguration of the 44th president of the United States of America. In doing so, we represented President Thomas S. Monson and the entire Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints," President Uchtdorf said.

"It was inspiring to be an eyewitness to this peaceful, impressive, transfer of power and the swearing-in of the first African American president. We pray for President Barack Obama's success in these challenging times and join in his expressions of hope and optimism," he said.

President Uchtdorf and Elder Ballard attended the swearing-in ceremony on January 20 and will attend the National Prayer Service at the Washington National Cathedral on January 21.

"It is always an honor for the Church to be represented at the inauguration of a new president," said President Thomas S. Monson. "We send our best wishes to President Obama and pray for the blessings of a loving Father in Heaven to be upon him and his administration."

A Remarkable Day in History

I just realized that of all days I decide to "blog" -- this should be one of them. I spent the morning smiling and cheering and getting chills from witnessing history, via television, of course. I am filled with hope as I see so many people coming together to usher in the promise of a new day in our great nation.

I commit to do my part to help create a better tomorrow for my grandchildren, my countrymen and my fellow world citizens.

Happy MLK Day

It's a national holiday today, in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King. It was a good day to start working with new clients at the nearby treatment center.  They will be interesting clients to work with.

Kyle called last night to describe the pre-Inaugural Concert on the Mall he and Erin had gone to yesterday. Sounded like an amazing experience. I know they will always remember they lived there (in DC) during this time.  They plan on attending the Inauguration tomorrow.  Can't wait to see video and pictures from their experiences. Like I told Kyle, we get to live vicariously through them. It's fun.  And I'm envious... in a good way.

Kory and I will go over to North Shore this afternoon and meet our "cabinet guy" to work out changes to the kitchen cabinets. We are hoping to be back in the house in a couple of months or so. Even though we have so much more room here, I'm anxious to go back; and I think Kory is too.

Not much else is going on.  Still in love with my life.

Until next time...

Havin' a Mahvelous Day

Wow.  What a morning. Met with a new client, and she's a good match for me, therapeutically--meaning, essentially, that I can help her.  While I was getting ready for that, I got a referral from a local doctor. That turned out to be a regular, 7-sessions a week (minimum) for a local treatment center [aka sober living home] that is about half a mile away.  I am now their staff clinician, and I met the guys that live there this afternoon.  I'll actually see two guys for individual sessions twice a week and then run a group that meets three times a week (hence seven sessions)--all at their facility, which is about half a mile from our home.  One of the things I like about this work is it will keep me immersed in recovery.

Kory will be waking up soon from his nap. I tried to sleep, but I just couldn't! I am seriously just too excited about all there is to do.

It's wonderful to feel this way, so I thought I'd share it.  :)

SLEEP!

Well, this is just the darndest thing.  I am having strange sleep patterns the last week or so. With seemingly the same ingredients to the day's activities, some days I am able to sleep (like a rock) through the night, other nights I can't fall asleep, and still other nights I wake up and can't GO back to sleep.  Tonight, I got up about an hour after we went to sleep and went downstairs for an hour or two. Came back to bed feeling really sleepy and still can't fall asleep. So now, I'm sitting in the bedroom, in a slider/rocker in the corner in the dark. The dog can't figure out WHAT the heck I'm up to!

And I'm waiting to be sleepy enough to go back to sleep!

I have a new client starting tomorrow morning... not until 10, but I don't want to be cotton-headed because I didn't get enough sleep.

Help!

Makinlee on her "Dance Cam"

So for Christmas, one of the gifts we got Makinlee was a "Dance Cam" -- made by Fisher-Price, I think. You hook it up to your TV and it shows your child dancing on the TV to music from the dance cam.  Ashley said they hooked it up a few days ago, and so they took this video of her dancing to it.  (We got it because Makinlee loves so to dance -- she's got "happy feet" they always say!)

What a cutie-pie.

Brazil Mail!

We got a package in the mail today from BRAZIL/BRASIL (depending on which way you spell it). Something from Kalen addressed to Kory and me.   Kory won't be home until late tonight, so of course I'll wait until he gets here to see it!

Gratitude (copying Karynn)

I just read Karynn's most recent post. So true, what she says, about gratitude.  It's a powerful, marvelous thing.

I heard once that we would be wise to make a gratitude list of all the things we are grateful for and put it in a drawer, tucked away for later review.  Then, the next time we're frustrated, irritated, whining, angry, etc., we should make a list of the things we are complaining about.  Then, we take that list and compare it to the gratitude list. Usually they are essentially the same. Many times the things we complain about are the very blessings that, on a good day, we would recognize as the most important elements of our lives.

Changing the subject.

Kory is in Santa Barbara. He goes every couple of weeks, driving up and back on the same day (bless his heart). He meets with people who lost their homes in Montecito. He'll be here late tonight.

I just got back from an errand-run to both post offices--took Pluto with me.  It's funny to see him do the whole "Bolt" thing and hang his head out the window of the truck. (Kory has the car.) Dogs, and animals of all kinds really, are so "in the moment" -- they don't get hung up on tomorrow or yesterday. I glanced over at him several times as I was driving--his head resting on the door, his ears flapping in the wind, and his nose high in the air, taking in the scents of the mountains. Being in the here-and-now is a powerful thing, and not something I manage to do all that often.  But sometimes I'll catch myself in the past or the future and can pull myself back to this moment. This is where God is. I can only feel his presence in the present.

And I am grateful for all of these blessings.

Life is Wonderful

...that's my theme for the day. Actually for the week. It's amazing to me: sometimes it's just a matter of deciding to have a new attitude!  Say a prayer, ask for a new attitude, and voila! There it is (if we choose to embrace it).

This morning I decided we needed a treadmill (after we watched Bob Green and Oprah on their webcast last night).  Kory thought it'd be a good idea to look for a used one, since the people who are selling them likely BARELY used them!  So, we did some research. Karynn said J.R. can help too. SO... if we buy new, that's what we'll do.

In the meantime, I checked once again for a new edition of DDR for the Wii - and IT'S OUT!  So I tracked one down, grabbed the dog, and made a quick trip down the mountain to get it. By noon I was dancin' away to new songs, new characters, new stages, new challenges!  Way fun!  Worked out (DDR-style) for about two hours today!

The good news is this will delay (or slow down) our need for a treadmill. If we come across a great deal, we can get one, or we can wait for a better deal.

Not much else going on.  Learning a lot these days, searching outside the typical psychotherapy sources for ideas about how to make a difference for my clients.

One I discovered today that looks interesting is Byron Katie.  She has a lot of material on YouTube if anyone is curious.

That's all for me. It's 8:09 and time to settle in for a great nights sleep.

Love,

V.

Best Life Week

Kory and I have spent much of the last week watching various Oprah shows. Her theme is Best Life Week. She's had a lot of info about nutrition, exercise, lifestyle balance, spirituality, etc.

We're getting ready to make major progress on the North Shore house... walls will be knocked out upstairs very soon!  I went over today and set out a lot of things to be given away or thrown away--mostly clothes and shoes that I just don't wear.

I also started using a Daytimer (again). Years ago, I took a Franklin time-planning seminar when we lived in Salt Lake City. It was really helpful. They taught us that making a list and then checking things off as you do them releases some chemical in the brain or something that feels good, making it a pleasant experience to get things done. It's amazing what I got done today, just because of that list.

Kollin called today to ask some specifics about how to make banana pudding. Sounded like he and BreAn were at the store or getting ready to go to the store to get ingredients to make some. I have sweet memories of making banana pudding with Kollin, dating back to the Heber days (1994 and on). There's a lot of patient stirring that has to take place over a hot stove, and Kollin used to help with that especially.  Karynn made me a special bowl for Christmas with "Grandma Booma's Banana Pudding" etched in the glass on one side.  (She made it using her new Cricut!)

We iSighted with Kollin, BreAn, Kourtney & Kayla last night. BreAn's hair looks so great (nice haircut, and healthy-healthy hair). Kayla is getting her mom's hair color while it looks like Kourtney's comes from Kollin's side of the family. I'm pretty sure Kollin starts school tonight--mostly Criminal Justice classes with one in Communication. Sounds really interesting, and I think he's really going to enjoy class and do very well at it.

We got scary but eventually good news from Karynn about her health.  And another e-mail today says things look fine with the tests so far.  (I can think a lot faster than people can talk, and yesterday when she said she'd had a trip to the hospital, my heart just about stopped beating.)

I talked to one of my former Patton patients again today. He's living at a Conditional Release Program facility in San Diego. He sounded so enthused about life and especially about using what he's learned to make a difference for others. It's infectious to talk to people who have such enthusiasm.  Made me feel good.

I think that's about it from here!

A Windy Saturday in the Mountains

What a nice day. We started the day by iSighting with Kurt and Makinlee in New York. (Ashley was gone until 3 at a class or something.)  Makinlee was beaming when she told us she's learning to use the potty. Kurt said it was starting to snow just a tiny bit in the Big Apple.  We talked about the fact that they're starting to lay off attorneys in New York; but so far, at his firm, things look okay.

We were going to take a walk with Pluto at noon today, but it's just too windy outside. It's chilly, which we could deal with; but it's mostly the wind we're avoiding.  (It couldn't possibly be the exercise I'm avoiding, right?)

We stayed up until 11 p.m. last night watching a movie!  Kory is never up that late, so he's napping right now.

Boring, I know.  We kind of like it this way.

Trying to Catch Up

There's a bit of pressure in having a blog. I haven't "blogged" in several days, and am feeling like I left the milk out of the refrigerator or something; and I have to get back to take care of it.  Okay. Strange analogy. What do you want from me?!  (I started to say "What do you want from me this late at night" and then I noticed it's only 6-something.  I am getting old. It seems so much later.)

Okay, Monday is a blur. I know something happened I wanted to write about, but... Oh wait! I remember.  I didn't hear back from the young man I was supposed to see for therapy (we'll call him Marvin, though that is not his name). I had left him a message over the weekend to let me know what time he could come on Monday so we could schedule two sessions back-to-back, since he hadto have 11 sessions completed by Friday, January 9th (today).  I figured I'd see him at 12:30 on Monday. By late morning I gave up on him for that day and figured I'd continue with other things. He called at 11:30 and asked if we could meet at 12:30.  I told him I had made other plans, but then changed my mind and said, "Okay, I'll see you there at 12:30."  I walked in at 12:30 and Larry was on the phone with "someone" who was canceling at the last minute. Yes, you guessed it. It was Marvin. Turns out he didn't go to school that day, so he couldn't take the bus to the session; and his mother, he found out, had a flat tire when time came for him to be given a ride.  Here I am, dressed professionally, have all my stuff I need in my briefcase, ready to go, and he's not coming. I made the best of it, visited with Larry, made some CDs for Colleen, and then got the mail and came home.

Tuesday, I had my appointment with Dr. Niccole in Newport Beach to have my nose checked at 1 pm. It was the latest appointment they had, which made me nervous, because I wanted to get out of Orange County before the traffic got too bad.  While I was getting ready to go down the hill, though, I was reading the blog from the MacWorld San Francisco keynote address. This is where we find out what the latest and greatest new Mac stuff is going to be. This is where they announced the iPhone a couple of years ago.  All this got me inspired to take my computer, broken keys and all, to the Apple Store in Fashion Island since it's about half a mile from the doctor's office. I figured if I go early, I can have the computer looked at, buy a new battery for Kory and do some shopping for a dress for the Chamber's Red & White on Valentine's Day.

Well, the Apple Store got a little expensive, and IT'S ALL KARYNN'S FAULT!  She said (when we saw her just before Christmas) that she couldn't believe I didn't have the latest Mac Book Pro.  To make a long story less long, I got the keys fixed (no charge) while I was there, and I also bought a new Mac Book Pro. Crazy, I know.  But I'm planning on doing what Karynn's doing with her "old" one and selling it on eBay (or somewhere)... that is, if Kory doesn't need it for something.  Anyway, I got to the doctor's appointment half an hour early and the waiting room was full. They didn't call me in to a room until 1:45 (45 mins late). I was trying not to stress too much; after all, it doesn't help anything. I got in the room and sat on that chair that might be comfortable if you're a mannequin. And I sat. And I sat. I sat for about 45 minutes, though they did come in once to take pictures of my nose. Mind you, the work was all internal, but because this is a cosmetic surgery office, they take before and afters of everything.  I kept telling myself the wait would be worth it, because he would undoubtedly remove any blockage or obstructions that were causing me some of the challenges I felt as I tried to enjoy my new nasal passages.  (I'm trying to keep this description as pleasant as possible.)  He finally came in, shook my hand, asked how everything was going, shined a flashlight up my nose and said, "Everything looks great!  Give it another three months to completely heal!"  THREE MONTHS MORE?  I thought it was only TWO MONTHS all totaled!  Anyway, nice guy, like the doctor a lot; but my expectations were kind of thrown out the window. Before I knew it, I was thanking him for the entire five minutes he spent with me.  By the time I got home, it was 5:30. It had been a seven-hour trip, boiled down to five minutes.  Okay, to be honest, I'm leaving out of that equation the hour or so at the Apple Store and the Jones New York dress and jacket I got at Macy's for the Chamber thing.  That was part of the seven hours too.   It's just that nothing changed with my nose!  Not yet.  Three more months. Ugh.

Okay, then Wednesday, my niece, Corrie, had an appointment in San Bernardino and planned on coming up afterward. I had rescheduled "Marvin"'s appointment to do all three of his final sessions on Wednesday afternoon, so she got here while I was gone with him. Pluto was here to greet her, though. She went with us to Grandpa Avarell's birthday party in Crestline. Kim and Marilyn were here from Fresno, and we had pizza and lasagna and a really nice time. One of the funniest things was that every time I'd introduce her to someone in the family, I'd say, "This is my niece, Corrie."  Almost everyone either said, "Kory?" or "You're kidding!" (because of the name).  It was funny.

After we left Crestline, Kory dropped us off in Blue Jay at a meeting. A young woman we knew from church gave us a ride home. It was a really great evening. Kory went to sleep shortly after that, and Corrie and I stayed up until 11 just talking.

Thursday morning, more visiting with Corrie. While sitting around the living room, I went through my mail from the day before, which included a year-end "Thank you" letter from the doctor I had just gone to see (the one who reconstructed my nose).  I mentioned what I was looking at to Corrie and soon thereafter threw the envelopes on the coffee table. A few minutes later, Corrie picked the one from the doctor up and said, "Oh. Cosmeticare.  I know a Dr. Niccole from Cosmeticare."  (That's my doctor.)  Turns out, she used to hang out with his two sons when she went to high school in Huntington Beach, which is where he lives.  She knows him and his family well!  Amazing.

We also made a quick trip to Radio Shack where an encounter with a salesman went something like this:  I said, "We're looking for 800 firewire cable." He said, "Do you want 4-pin or 6-pin?"  "Just 800 firewire. I'll know it when I see it."  "What kind of a Mac do you have?" he asks. "The new 15-inch, which only uses 800."  Then he starts in on something like this:  "I have a Mac too. Some of them use 4-pin and some use 6-pin..." and I think he started describing the physical characteristics of the connectors or something.  I told him I was very familiar with Macs and had been using them for more than 15 years (Corrie later commented that it had been much longer, and we figured out it's been 22, yikes!). At one point, during this guy's soliloquy, Corrie said something like, "Okay, let's go." I knew she had lost her patience with the guy, as had I. I just hadn't given up the ghost yet. I told him I knew what the connector looked like and asked him to show me what he had, which he did.  They were not 800 firewire cables; they were 400 firewire camera cables. So we left.

I had wanted to show Corrie the house Kory built on Manitoba. We pulled into the driveway, which was half covered in snow (the half that was in the shade). We went in and looked at the house and were leaving in just enough time to get Corrie back to the North Bay house so she could get on the road for a rehearsal she had in Pasadena at 6 p.m.  I decided it would be a good idea to turn around in the driveway (remember the one that was half covered in snow? -- yes, that's the one).  We got stuck.  And I do mean stuck.  No shovel, no gloves, just stuck. I pulled out a Geodon doorhanger that was made out of hard plastic that I had in my car for some reason, and Corrie used that to dig some snow out from behind the front tires. Then she used her impressive 105-pound (I'm guessing) frame to try to push the car out from the front. Didn't work. I had no signal, but she did, so she used her Blackberry to text Kory asking him to help or to send someone to help. He soon texted back that he was sending help.

About 10 minutes later, he pulled up in front of the house.  My hero to the rescue!!  (It really is a very comforting, secure feeling to know he's there for me.) He brought a couple of shovels with him, used them for less than a minute and said, "Try it now." And we were off!  Corrie grabbed her stuff, said a quick goodbye, and took off for L.A.

Now... I neglected to mention Twitter.  Corrie Twitters. And Twitters. At just about every step of the way, her fingers began tip-tapping quickly across the Blackberry keys to tell the world of our adventures. So after she left, I went to Twitter and "joined." I'm certain I'm way too old for this, but I did it anyway. About 20 minutes later, if that, Corrie called from the road and said something like, "I've got the coolest Auntie ever" (at least I heard something like that). She had gotten a Twitter announcement about me, apparently.  Pretty funny.

And that finally brings us to today, Friday. Not a very productive day, but it was good (so far). This morning I spent AN HOUR on the phone with "Marvin" 's mediator (the person who had sent him for counseling).  He and his partner have the Restorative Justice Center in Upland, where they keep people (mostly juveniles) out of the court system by doing mediation with the victim and the offender to arrange non-jail-time consequences. (Marvin had beaten another kid up at school because he was talking "s _ _ _" about Marvin's girlfriend.)  This guy is interested in doing divorce mediation and may use me as a resource, since I so enjoy couples counseling. Hopefully if the counseling works, the mediation becomes unnecessary.

Anyway, (I've noticed I say "anyway" a lot... sorry about that), Kory and I are having our "sacred time" together, as we do every Friday starting at noon. Nothing in particular is on the agenda, other than time dedicated to being together. We went to Rite-Aid to buy an old home remedy for my nose that Gisela Schmeidel told me about on Sunday. We got vitamins, dog toys, picture frames, windshield washer fluid and rechargeable batteries.  We forgot the nose thing. So Kory, bless his heart, went back to get it and we're about to watch a movie.

Whew!  It's a lot of work keeping up on this!  I doubt seriously that anyone will actually read this. So, please do me a favor. If you've read this? Will you send me an e-mail or post a comment that you actually did?  I owe you if you read all this!!  Thanks for taking an interest and for caring.

Bye for now!

First Sunday of the Year

This morning we switched back to the 9 a.m. time slot for church. Much better. Of course, last year, I think I thought 12:30 sounded good. I kind of like switching every year--keeps things different.

Anyway, Kory and I teach the 11-year-old class in Primary. When we first got this calling, I thought -- "That's great!" because I used to teach 10-11 year olds about 10 years ago, and they were a delight.  The class happened to be all girls at the time, and we had a blast. In the last few years, I've delighted to see them graduate from high school, go on to college, several are married now. It's been a great experience. Well, the class we have now is a different experience for me. First of all, it's smaller. Typically three to five students, only one of which is female. That's one major difference. Also -- have you seen that TV commercial about herding cats? That's a little what our class seems like sometimes. Here's where one of the major differences between Kory and I shows up. He is WAAAAY more patient than I. He'll start the lesson and one boy will make a remark to another boy, and they'll start laughing or goofing around; and Kory will patiently wait. He was continuously getting interrupted and having to get their attention all over again.  It was driving me crazy.  Two weeks ago, I decided I couldn't do it. I was really unable to help, because our teaching styles were so different. I understand his philosophy: he wants to keep it fun for the kids so they don't avoid coming to church. I get that. If he gets too strict with them, then class becomes something to avoid. I get that too. I just don't know how to do it that way. When I had my class of little angels, I used other methods (I guess) of keeping them motivated. Or, maybe I was just lucky.

Anyway, today I mentioned to Brother Neubert (presides over Primary) that I might not be able to continue with the class portion of Primary with that group of kids; but that Kory had said it might change today because our lone female would no longer be in class starting this week, because she was now in Young Women.  Kory had said he thought that she was the cause of a lot of the craziness we were experiencing in class, but I hadn't seen that to be the case. Well, Br. Neubert said he would drop by during class time to check it all out.

So what happened today?  Four boys, no girls.  They were perfect.  Well almost.  Perfect enough. And of course, when Brother Neubert stopped in for the last 20 minutes of class, the lesson was going smoothly, the boys were participating well and actually doing what they were asked and learning. (Don'tcha just love it when the husband is right?!?)  Anyway, it was funny.

Life is a lot like that. I think I know something. I hear another point of view. I think that person is off base, and then I figure out that, yes, someone was off base, but it wasn't the other person! Very interesting. I like being teachable, even though I still think I am stubborn in many ways.

We never stop learning and progressing, even when we think we're doing the same old thing over and over, we're usually getting a wee bit better at least.  Progress, not perfection, is what I want to seek. There was only one truly perfect one that I know of, and I am most certainly not Him, though I can seek to progress to be more like him.

And now? It's 2:42 p.m., and Kory is napping. He thinks he is coming down with something, so he's taking an extra long sleep. We have all afternoon and evening to enjoy the day.

I hope you are enjoying yours!

Amazing Scents

So this afternoon, Kory and I went out with Pluto for a walk. It was really cold. Lots of snow on the sides of the roads. Temperatures were in the low 30s. We got to the end of Manitoba where we park when we walk the sewer road, and Pluto started getting overly excited as soon as we drove up. There was one other car there that reminded us of Linda -- the lady who owns Pluto's girlfriend, Socks. She hadn't called in a few days (she often picks up Pluto and takes him and Socks out to romp around the lake). Anyway, we knew she'd been out of town for the holidays and figured we'd hear from her soon.  We started walking down the sewer road with Pluto on a leash. This is the one place we've managed to teach him how to walk on a leash without pulling us, etc. Well, apparently he had some of nature's business to take care of, and we were concerned he would get it all over the leather leash, so we unhooked it. He proceeded to essentially snorkel around the top of the snow, up and down, back and forth on the road. We thought he was being awfully particular about where he "went."  He finally ventured off the snow and up a dirt hill and found his spot. Then we put him back on his leash.

Now this was the strange part. He would NOT let us walk with him on a leash. At least not comfortably, that is. He pulled and was so excited to move forward, we finally gave up and let him loose. Usually we don't do that until we're part of the way back from the 2-mile walk. We were a little cautious about the car we had seen back on Manitoba, because there could be small children or people who might be frightened if he ran up to them, so we kept calling him back from time to time, keeping an eye out for people walking our way.

After a while, we heard people coming. Kory called to Pluto who was up on the hill to our right. Then Kory said, "Oh, it's okay, they have a dog."  Their dog started thundering toward us, and I said, "That looks like Socks." And it was. The two of them were so excited to see one another, I thought they would have heart attacks. Then we realized it:   Pluto had picked up Socks' scent back in the snow when we first started the trek! (Exclamation point is for you, Karynn!)

They say a dog's sense of smell is 1,000 times better than a human's. Bloodhounds are even more sensitive.  It was really amazing to us.

Kory had both dogs chasing snowballs up and down the street and down the hillsides along the pavement.  It's fun to see. I get to live vicariously when I watch him get such joy out of bounding through the snow. I get a kick out of it.  It reminds me of being around the grandchildren. Watching them play and learn and explore--what a wonderful world we live in.

I would love to have seen Jespen at Disneyland on New Year's Day. He was two the last time he went, so he doesn't really remember much. It's such a treat to see kids faces light up and their reactions to the sights and sounds and sensations of such a fun place.  (Can't wait to see the pictures, Karynn.)

And Makinlee at Disney on Ice?  More pictures I can't wait to see.

You know, getting and being old is okay. You have the mindset you've worked your way into that is comfortable and content with whom it is you've become, and your body won't do all the things it used to do. But you get to see the young doing things you never dreamed of, as well as things you can't or don't do any more, and you get to live it all again (in a way) through them.

Didn't mean to end up so philosophical. Just intended to tell the dog story.

Oh well!!! !!! !!!

2009 Is Here!

Well, Kyle just left to fly back to Washington, D.C. It was great to have him here for so long. We had lunch with him and Erin today, and the this afternoon got plenty of time to visit before he took off.

Life will be sort of back to normal here in a few days. School starts again on Monday. The parents I've talked to are especially ready because the break ended up being a week longer because of the snow!

Kory and I took a nice long walk with Pluto (the dog) yesterday, out the LACSD sewer road. It was crisp but plenty warm. It's been way too long since I've made that walk. I used to do it every morning, until I missed it ONE time; and then the whole habit was broken!

We're off now to Blue Jay to do a few things and then settle in for the rest of our regular "Sacred TIme" at home. (We take every Friday from noon on as time dedicated to being together.)

Happy New Year, everyone!

Are you sitting down?

I neglected to  mention yesterday that Kory got a new (finally) cell phone (the new, smaller Treo).  He likes it... so far.  No  more (we hope) batteries failing and having an ureliable phone.

Today we took a walk with the dawg and went to the noon meeting. Watched a little football and Kory watched much of the road parade, while tried to stay out of hearing range.  (Bugs me for some reason.)

My B, N and M keys got caught on something the other night and I need to have someone replace the  who knows what they're doing. Meanwhile, my typing is either missing letters or I have to go very  methodically and slow.

Got that surprise call from Karynn this morning from Disneyland!  J.R. surprised the family with the trip!  What a nice Dad!!  Sounded like they were having fun and we hope to soon see a LOT of pictures!

Until next time...
